Happy Holidays everyone!
The holidays are fast approaching, and for me, that means one thing: baking season is in full swing! Sure, I bake throughout the year, but there’s something magical about this time of year that makes me want to bake all the things. This year, however, the season kicked off with a bit more excitement than I anticipated.
It all started this past Friday when my boyfriend wasn’t feeling great. He asked me to make him a batch of chocolate chip cookies, and of course, I couldn’t say no. One batch quickly turned into two when I found out his mom needed a dessert for a holiday party the next day. This cookie recipe is one of my go-to favorites, so I happily offered to double the batch. Challenge accepted.
The cookies start with melting and browning butter—a delicious but notoriously messy process. If you’ve ever done it, you know the potential for chaos. Adding to the challenge, my boyfriend’s stove is an older electric model with uneven burners and more residual heat than anyone ever needs. I knew things might get tricky, but I wasn’t expecting what came next.
Four sticks of butter + a pot that was slightly too small = disaster!

The butter boiled over, and while I managed to move the pot off the burner in time, the heat in the pot was still too much. Butter started bubbling over onto the counter. There I was, stuck holding a pot of molten butter, with nowhere to go. My mom always taught me that when something is spilling, don’t move it—you’ll only make it worse. So, I stood there, watching helplessly as butter flowed across the countertop.
Hearing the commotion, my boyfriend jumped up from the living room to help. He grabbed paper towels to mop up the mess, but in all the chaos, I forgot to turn off the stove. The next thing I knew, the fat-soaked paper towel touched the hot burner and burst into flames. Butter was splattering on the floor, I was frantically shutting off the stove, and now we had a mini kitchen fire to deal with.
Thankfully, the fire was quickly extinguished as my boyfriend threw the flaming towel into the sink. Once the butter was cleaned up, I finally set down the pot—into a bowl that had been sitting beside me the entire time. If I’d noticed that bowl earlier, this entire mess could have been avoided!
After the drama, my boyfriend insisted I take a break. We spent the next hour relaxing on the couch, watching some old holiday classics on TV. Once I felt more composed, I finally got back to making the cookie dough. That night, I baked a tester batch—partly to ensure they tasted perfect, and partly because someone deserved a fresh batch of cookies after all that excitement.
The whole ordeal taught me a few valuable lessons:
- 1. Always use a pot that’s bigger than you think you need when melting butter.
- 2. Pay attention to the bowl sitting right there—it might just save your sanity.
Despite the chaos, the cookies turned out amazing, and I’ve got a story to tell every time I bake them now. Cheers to holiday baking adventures—let’s hope the rest are less eventful!
